When to Upgrade Your Electrical Panel
Frequent breaker trips as you add more appliances
A panel rated below 100 amps in a home with modern appliances
Plans to add an EV charger, hot tub, or major appliance
A panel labeled Federal Pacific or Zinsco
Lights that dim when larger appliances turn on
A fuse box instead of a modern breaker panel
200 Amp vs. 100 Amp: How Many Amps Do You Need?
Most older homes were built with 100 amp service, which was enough for basic lighting, outlets, and appliances at the time. A 200 amp panel gives you room for higher demand, including EV chargers, electric ranges, heat pumps, and homes that are adding more electric appliances instead of gas ones. If you are only running a typical mix of lighting, outlets, and a few standard appliances, 100 amps may still be enough. If you are adding an EV charger or planning to electrify appliances that used to run on gas, 200 amps gives you the headroom to do that safely.
If your existing breakers cannot handle the added load even though the panel itself is fine, that may point to a circuit breaker replacement instead of a full panel change.
What's Inside Your Electrical Panel Box
Your electrical panel box holds a few key parts that work together to keep your home’s power supply safe. The main breaker controls power to the whole panel and shuts everything off if needed. Branch breakers are the smaller switches that each protect one circuit, like a bedroom’s outlets or a kitchen appliance. Bus bars carry power from the main breaker to each branch breaker, and a solid connection at every point matters for safety.
Loose connections or corroded bus bars can lead to overheating over time. Proper installation is what keeps all of this working correctly for years. If a single part is failing rather than the whole panel, that is more often addressed with a focused electrical panel repair.

Why Choose Marvel Electricians
What Our Electricians Say
“Our experience with questions about an old recalled or unsafe panel brand, such as Federal Pacific, taught us to confirm the connected load and accessible wiring before suggesting broader work.”
— our electrician
“If the concern involves a panel that was too small for an EV charger and added appliances, keep a short record of timing and related changes. That history can separate a recurring pattern from a one-time event.”

What Our Customers Say
“Our home’s electrical panel was outdated and struggling to keep up with our energy demands, so we decided to call an electrical service for an electrical panel replacement. The team was incredibly professional, explaining the entire process clearly and completing the installation efficiently. Now, our electrical system is safer and more reliable, thanks to their expertise and attention to detail.”
Alfhajanella Hero, Ventura, CA
“We upgraded our old 100 amp main to a new 3.5 ton central AC unit and, after one week, the circuit breaker directory label that was on the inside of the main door panel had been victim of heat radiating off of the bus bars during peak load times in the afternoon. The electrician was able to increase the size of our service panel from 200 amp to 200 amp with an open panel, installed a new meter base, installed a new service entrance cable and we now had 14 circuit breaker slots available for use and the panel’s operating temperature was only 39℃ and had combined AC and household load almost double the safe operating temperature — all while the bus bar remained at 81℃.”

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does electrical panel repair cost?
Panel installation starts at $1,000. The final price depends on the panel size and any permit work involved.
How long does a typical panel repair take?
Most panel installations are completed in one day, though scheduling the required permit and inspection can add a few days to the overall timeline.
Do I need a permit for panel repair?
Yes, in almost every case. Our electricians pull the permit and coordinate the inspection so you do not have to manage that process yourself.
Is it safe to keep using a panel that keeps tripping?
We do not recommend it. These older panels can have serious safety problems, and we can inspect yours to tell you plainly whether it needs to be replaced.
Are your electricians licensed?
Yes. Marvel Electricians has been a licensed electrical contractor since 2009, and every panel installation is performed by a licensed electrician.
